What is real and what is original

Real data

The missions, images, relief, the “Mars by the Numbers” figures, planetary positions and the facts of exploration are based on real data from space agencies and scientific sources (NASA, ESA, JPL, CNSA and others). They are rounded and simplified for outreach purposes.

The Martian calendar is the author’s own

The Martian calendar (Martian Horizon Time Standard, MH-STD-001) is a creation of the site’s author: it is not official and no space agency recognises it. It has been built with great rigour and links faithfully and consistently with the rest of the site (missions, events, converter and orbital map), but it is a standard of its own.

The Mars Atlas is fiction

The Mars Atlas is a futuristic vision of how Mars might develop around Martian year 100. Its cities, roads, ports and populations do not exist and do not follow any real plan: it has nothing to do with reality, except that certain original place names and the planet’s real relief have been used as a base.

None of it should be used to plan real missions or is presented as official information. See the Terms of Use and the Credits.

2. Purpose and conditions of use

Martian Horizon is an outreach portal about Mars, space exploration and Martian time. Access is free and implies acceptance of this Legal Notice and the Terms of Use. Users agree to use the site lawfully and without harming its operation or third-party rights.

Nature of the content. Part of the site is based on real data (missions, images, relief, figures and planetary positions); another part is the author’s own creation with no official status: the MH-STD-001 Martian calendar, rigorous and linked with the rest of the site but not recognised by any agency, and the Mars Atlas, a futuristic and fictional vision of Mars’s development that bears no relation to reality beyond using some original place names. Users must not take these creations as official information.

3. Intellectual and industrial property

The texts, design, code, simulators, the Martian calendar (Martian Horizon Time Standard, MH-STD-001), converter, orbital map and other original content belong to the owner unless stated otherwise. Reproduction, distribution or transformation for commercial purposes without written permission is prohibited. Quoting with a link to this site is allowed.

Images and data from space agencies and third parties keep their original terms of use; see Credits and Attributions. Mission, agency and brand names mentioned belong to their respective owners.

4. Liability

The content is for outreach and educational purposes. We strive for accuracy and up-to-date information but do not guarantee the absence of errors or uninterrupted availability. Planetary positions, launch windows and computed dates are educational approximations and must not be used for real mission planning or critical decisions.
