How this tool works and what it shows

The converter translates any Earth date and time (UTC) into Martian date and time (MTC) and back, following the MH-STD-001 Martian calendar.

How the conversion works

  1. It starts from a fixed point: 6 January 2000 at 00:00:00 UTC is also 00:00:00 MTC (sol 6 of the month Olympo, year 24).
  2. The time elapsed since that point is computed and divided by the length of the sol: 88,775.244 s (24 h 39 min 35.244 s), i.e. 1.0274912527 Earth days.
  3. Whole sols are distributed into years of 668, 669 or 670 sols and into 18 months of 37 or 38 sols (letters A to R); the remainder is the Martian time of day: 24 hours of 60 minutes of 60 Martian seconds.

Dates are always stored in UTC; the Martian date is computed when shown. You can read all the rules in the calendar guide.
