Food Production
"You can't carry 3 years' worth of food in your backpack. You must grow it on a planet with poisonous soil and half the sunlight."
Key Data
The Hostile Reality
Martian soil lacks the microbiome (bacteria and fungi) necessary for plants. Furthermore, perchlorates are absorbed by roots, making any crop grown in "raw" soil toxic for human consumption. Low sunlight requires massive supplemental LED lighting, consuming vast energy.
Current Tech (TRL 9)
Hydroponics and Aeroponics: Used on the ISS and Antarctica (Eden ISS). Plants grow without soil, in liquid nutrient solutions. This avoids soil toxicity issues and uses 95% less water.
Basic Staples: Potatoes, dwarf wheat, and lettuce.
Future Engineering
Algae Bioreactors: Spirulina and Chlorella are extremely efficient at converting CO2 and light into protein and oxygen. They taste like "green slime," but keep you alive.
Cultured Meat: Growing cow or chicken muscle cells in a lab to obtain animal protein without raising (or feeding) the whole animal.
