"There is no Amazon on Mars. If a critical part breaks and you have no spare nor can manufacture it, the mission (and the crew) ends."

The Hostile Reality

Entropy is inevitable. Air filters, water pumps, suit seals... everything degrades. The nearest supply chain is 200 million kilometers away and takes 9 months to arrive. A colony must be able to repair ANYTHING with what it has on hand.

Current Tech (TRL 9)

3D Printing (Plastic): The ISS has the "Refabricator," recycling waste plastic to print tools and simple parts.

Extreme Redundancy: ECLSS life support systems have triple or quadruple redundancy. If primary fails, and secondary, options remain.

Future Engineering

ISRU Foundries: Capability to melt scrap metal or extract iron/titanium from Martian soil to print heavy structural parts and complex machinery spares.

Biomanufacturing: Using bacteria to produce polymers, bioplastics, and medicines in-situ.
